India UPI Goes Live in 7 New Countries as NPCI Pushes Global Real-Time Payment Interoperability

P. HernandezApril 16, 2026

NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) announced Tuesday that India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is now operational in 7 additional countries: Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Kenya, Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, and Canada. The expansion brings the total number of countries with UPI acceptance to 18.

The rollout enables Indian travelers and diaspora communities to make QR code payments using their existing UPI apps at millions of merchant locations abroad. Reciprocal access — allowing foreign citizens to use their local payment apps in India — is live in Singapore, UAE, and Sri Lanka, with more countries expected by year-end.
